Minnesota Sales Tax Changes: How
to Manage and Stay Compliant
New Transit Sales Tax Changes Take Effect July 1,
2008
Starting July 1st 2008, the
Minnesota Department of Revenue is instituting a new
Sales Tax to fund transit improvements, including light
rail, commuter rail and bus rapid transit. Businesses
will need to begin collecting an additional 0.25% sales
tax on applicable transactions. The new tax will be
reported on your Minnesota sales and use tax return,
however the figures will need to be accounted for
separately. Five counties will be affected: Anoka,
Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey and Washington.
What does this mean for you? More
work! Managing this quarter of one percent sales tax is
more complicated than you think. First you will need to
update all of your tax tables and schedules. Many ZIP
codes in this area overlap the boundaries of the new
tax. This means you will need to be prepared to
spend a good amount of time reviewing your records
thoroughly to determine which tax schedules
need updating and then you need to
actually make the changes.
